Alphonso mango is a seasonal fruit, considered to be among the most superior varieties of the fruit in terms of sweetness, richness and flavour. The variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portuguese general and military expert who helped establish Portuguese colonies in India. The Portuguese introduced grafting on mango trees to produce extraordinary varieties like Alphonso. The fruit was then introduced to the Konkan region in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat and some parts of southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka andKerala. The Alphonso is also one of the most expensive varieties of mango and is grown mainly in western India including places such as Sindhudurg,Ratnagiri and Raigad districts and in the Konkan region of India . Each mango weighs between 150 and 300 grams (5.3and 10.6 oz).
Banganapalle or Banagana Palli is a town in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It lies in Kurnool district, 70 km south of the town of Kurnool. Banganapalle is famous for its mangoes and has a cultivar, Banganapalle, named after it. Between 1790 and 1948, Banganapalle was the capital of the princely state of the same name, Banganapalle State. Safeda/ Banganapalli Season - April to June Banganapalle is a mango variety generally known as The King of Mangoes, cultivar named after Banganapalle. This is one of the earliest varieties of mangoes to hit the market. Originally from AndhraPradesh, Safeda has found widespread acceptance across the country. The skin has a lovely bright yellow hue and the taste is slightly sour. These mangoes are quite fibreless. An unspoilt obliquely oval specimen presents an unblemished golden yellow thin edible skin. These mangoes are large sized, weighing on an average 350-400 grams. The pulp is fibreless, firm and yellow with sweet taste.
Imam Pasand aka Himayat or Himayuddin or Humayun Pasand or himma pasand is a lesser known and exclusive mango cultivar, grown in AndhraPradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu states in India. It is touted to have a taste that can challenge the Alphonso. The names suggest regal origins and it is said to have been the fruit of choice for India’s royalty. It is a large, not too attractive looking mango, mottled green that lightens to blotched yellow-green as it ripens. It is available only during the months of May and June and each mango could grow up to 800 grams in weight. It is prized by connoisseurs for its unique taste and it has been considered as the 'King among Mangoes'. Many mangoes are initially sweet, but are undone by aftertastes which can be harsh, rank, chalky or chemical - unlike Alphonsos, with their aroma and incredibly rich smoothness of its aftertaste.
The Totapuri or Ginimoothi mango is a cultivar that is widely grown in South India and is partially cultivated in Sri Lanka. It also goes by the names 'Bangalora', 'Collector', 'Kallamai', 'Kili Mooku', 'Gilli', 'Mukku', 'Sandersha', and 'Thevadiyamuthi'. In Bengaluru it is referred to as Ginimoothi Maavina Kayi, while most of the rest of India calls it 'Totapuri' or 'Bangalora'. 'Totapuri' was imported to Florida in 1901 as Sandersha and in the 1960s as Totapuri. It is the parent of at least two Florida mango cultivars, 'Anderson' and 'Brooks'. Totapuri is one of the main cultivars grown in India for mango pulp, along with 'Alphonso' and 'Kesar'. The tree is medium size with greenish yellow fruits. These mangoes are the easiest to identify, due to the shape with the tip looking like a parrot’s beak. The flesh is not sweet like the other mango varieties but is great for salads or with a tempering of salt and chilies. It is used as an ingredient for many mass-produced mango products in India.
